Manitoba's Minister for Growth, Enterprise and Trade says parts of the province are facing some tough times. Spruce Woods MLA Cliff Cullen says a number of the problems or challenges are beyond government's control.

"Certainly there are some challenges in Northern Manitoba. Some businesses are shutting down, or looking to sell. So, that creates uncertainty for people. And obviously we certainly are cognizant of the potential job loss there, and how that's going to affect communities. So, we're working with our prospective buyers and seeing if we can come to some type of solution. I think it's our job as a government to facilitate solutions in those communities. So, obviously there's a lot of work going on behind the scenes."

He notes the province is working to make Manitoba more attractive for businesses to set up shop. Cullen says parts of the province are facing challenges in keeping businesses.

"I think for us as a government moving forward, it's about getting the fundamentals right in terms of attracting investment to Manitoba. If we can get the fundamentals right I think that's the key thing for us as a government."

Cullen admits the government has a responsibility to make the province attractive for businesses to set up shop.

"Making sure we got the right structure in place, and having people come here to invest here for the long term is really what it's about. There are opportunities there in terms of the U.S. dollar, and challenges in some different sectors, but some opportunities in others. Everybody looks at it a little differently."

He adds there's no quick fix, but they're doing what they can.
