Council for the Town of Carman wants to work with Manitoba Public Insurance in approving a new, eco-friendly vehicle for use on town roads. Mayor Bob Mitchell says Council is hoping to revisit an idea from a few years ago that would see Neighbourhood Electric Vehicles approved for town use.

"It's like a golf cart but legal for the street so its got signal lights and mirrors, headlights. A lot of resort places have them, the one that comes to mind always is Palm Springs. There's areas in Florida that's all you drive around on."

Mitchell adds this idea was supported by the province about four or five years ago, however it got bottle-necked at MPI as the Crown corporation ran into to issues on how to license and insure these vehicles. He says hopefully a new government will provide some new insight on how to accomplish this.

"The next approach will be to set up a meeting with the Minister that's responsible for this and whoever's responsible for MPI and try to get those two to give us the right people that we can deal with. It's not the ministers that we'll deal with, it's their assistants or bureaucrats that know the pitfalls and then we address those."

He adds these NEVs are a great eco-friendly transportation option for residents of a small community like Carman.

"There's a lot of vehicles on the roads that could be replaced, at least in the summer time, by these."

"There's all kinds of towns apparently in North Dakota that do this so somebody's looked at it," added Mitchell.
