The Manitoba Legislature resumed yesterday in Winnipeg. Portage la Prairie MLA and Minister of Education and Training Ian Wishart says it started with previous bills, and with paycheques.

"We have a number of bills from the previous session -- about 20, I believe -- and we're certainly going to be introducing a bunch more," says Wishart. "I guess we started off on the right foot by announcing that we will not be taking MLA pay increases to show solidarity with Manitobans."

He says some programs will be discussed that will impact the Portage area including the flood concern. He adds several items need to be addressed, such as the illegal immigration of refugees from the U.S., as well as changes in the province's nominee program that he promises will benefit businesses in Portage.

Wishart notes his role includes dealing with education, and explains he'll get funding for schools and post secondaries on a sustainable basis, adding he's always in discussion with post-secondary and the K-12 system to ensure they work.
