The Manitoba Government has postponed its education review, which was set to be released this month, due to COVID-19.

Portage la Prairie MLA Ian Wishart sheds light on where things will go from here.

“The review is completed and we were targeting a release to the public at the end of the month, at the end of March," he notes. "However, with all of the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and the fact that we’re not really encouraging groups to gather, we’re delaying that until such point in the future where that is not an additional risk.”

The review started last year and took an in-depth look at all aspects of the education system.

Wishart gives a timeline on when it’ll be released.

“We don’t expect it to be too much longer into the future, but we want to focus on the critical issue of COVID-19 right now. Nothing would have been implemented from this until 2021 anyway, so we do have a little bit of time to delay it and not change the outcome.”

Wishart says the review will affect the school divisions and it’ll affect everyone in the school system.

“It’s been a long time since this process has been done, a review of the education system in Manitoba, almost 30 years. A lot of things have changed and we are trying very hard in this review to catch up to modern times and put something sustainable in place for the future.”
