It's important to take care of your pets during this week of extreme heat. Dr. Tammy Dunbar with the Portage Animal hospital says you need to take care of your furry friend, just as you would yourself.

"It's important that when we get these extreme heat conditions that your dog has a lot of shade. That they have good access to fresh water and a place where they can get out of the elements. I'm not saying they all need to be inside, but they do need to be provided with a lot of water and good shade."

She adds it really isn't a good idea to have any types of pets in your vehicle, even when you're driving.

"It just takes minutes for the temperature in a vehicle to rise to a dangerous level. Even if you're travelling with your animals -- and it's like a bigger vehicle -- make sure they have some air conditioning in the back, and dogs in parked cars is bad. Any animals in parked cars is bad."

She adds cats are usually pretty good at finding shade, and waiting out the heat.
