One Portage la Prairie resident will celebrate Canada Day in the icy waters of Hudson Bay.

Kara-Jean Miller's taking part in the first Ultimate Polar Plunge in Churchill, in support of Special Olympics.

She's raised about $10,000 in seven Polar Plunges already, but this one means some travel time.

"On July 1st, we'll be flying out from Winnipeg, and we'll be taking part in their Canada Day celebrations. At 6:45 p.m., we'll be running into Hudson Bay, when the tide is coming in."

Miller describes the plunge as a big shock to the system.

She's been involved in seven Polar Plunges closer to home, and explains why.

"It all started when we had a Special Olympian from Portage be able to compete in South Korea. All the money from every Polar Plunge, and event, sticks with the Manitoba athletes to help them travel to all the competitions, as well as my brother, in Special Olympics."
