A new student program was discussed at yesterday's School Board Meeting in Portage la Prairie.

The 2016 G.I.R.L Forum was held out in Southport not too long ago. Organizer Allie Nadeau says they had some students from both Portage and WC Miller Collegiate take part in the forum, with fantastic results.

"Basically we had 18 girls from around south-central Manitoba came and discussed issues they thought were important and come up with ways to solve them and implement the solutions in their school. Overall we're hoping to just make people feel more comfortable with themselves, and be able to succeed. That's not just women, we started with women but we're also hoping to involve everybody."

Nadeau gives some details of what went on.

"So far we invited them out to Southport. We had a room out there, or a building I guess, that we got together and had our forum in to come up with some solutions (for teenage issues) and everything. We've got things like performing random acts of kindness, working on body image, and several other issues young people face today."

She says they're planning on checking in the students at both schools over the year.

"We haven't gone out there yet, were hoping to have some teleconferences or Skype now with (WC Miller) or something in between now and the spring to see if they need help or keep them motivated, and see how things are going."

There's will be an all ages, everyone welcome, fashion show at PCI in February as part of the program.
