Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen has concerns about the Liberal government's willingness to re-visit the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Bergen says while the incoming U.S. administration has been clear it wants to re-open NAFTA, president-elect Donald Trump has indicated the primary concerns lie with Mexico, and not Canada.

"There's a lot of concern that Prime Minister Trudeau would immediately offer to open up NAFTA, when that wasn't even an issue," Bergen says. "Instead of going into any possible negotiations from a position of strength, he's already gone in saying: 'sure, we'll give something up, we'll open it up.'"

"NAFTA is a very important trade agreement for Canadians," continues Bergen. "It has created millions of jobs and brought in billions of dollars of investment."

Bergen adds if NAFTA is re-visited, there's been no indication from the Liberals of what areas they would like to see changed.

"We don't even know what kinds of tweaks are being looked at. We don't know what Prime Minister Trudeau is looking at changing. That's a concern," Bergen explains. "It's really all hypothetical and everybody would be guessing. But either way there's a big impact for Canadians, and certainly for Manitoba and Southern Manitoba in terms of the importance of NAFTA."

Many businesses in the Portage-Lisgar area have U.S. customers, Bergen notes, especially in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors. She says there would be a huge effect for those types of businesses in her constituency in the event any changes are made to NAFTA.
