The Portage la Prairie Voyageur Lions Club wants to find a way to give back to the community during COVID-19.

They’ve organized a food drive to take place this weekend.

Club President Robert Martin says it starts on Sunday.

“It’ll be held at the Lion’s Den, which is on Island Park behind Splash Island. It is from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.”

They're hoping to use this as a way to help out Portage's homeless community.

Here’s the kind of items they’re looking for.

“We’d like to get stuff that is easy to open like cans that have the pull tab, and that can be opened or anything that they can use. We’re also looking for hygiene products like deodorant, soap, and shampoo so they can go and get themselves cleaned up.”

They will also accept donations of dog food, which will go to the Portage Animal Welfare Society.

Martin Explains who the Portage la Prairie Voyageur Lions Club is.

“Right now, we are under the old Portage Lions Club that’s been here for many years. We’re always looking for new members of course. As soon as we can get enough members so that we can get our charter, we’ll be getting our charter. That means we will become a separate club.”
