A collaboration between students from across the country was made by means of music.

Ava Smith is a Grade 8 student at École Arthur Meighen School and was one of two Manitobans involved.

"There were 40 violinists from all over Canada," says Smith. "They were all students. The youngest was eleven and others to their mid-20's. We were all performing this piece, but we all got different parts. It was a small portion by Bach."

She notes she practiced and recorded her part with a Click Track, then sent it in to be edited and mixed with the other videos. Smith explains it was then all played at the same time. She says it was really cool because there's not that many classical musicians in Portage, so she felt like she connected with other musicians during this time of isolation.

"It's called United In Isolation," adds Smith. "The point was more to just reach out to people during this time and bring them some music just for fun so that we can show that we're in this altogether."

Smith says she was also interviewed on television and radio in Quebec. She explains she was the only Manitoban who spoke French, so she was part of the interview. Smith adds it was quite nerve-wracking but she prepared quite a bit, making it better than she thought it might turn out to be.
