Portage la Prairie RCMP report a rash of break and enters occurred in the area over the past weekend.

Police say in a release, several homes, garages and vehicles were broken into. RCMP media liaison Const. Sean O'Keefe says more than 15 cars were rummaged through in the Odd Fellow Apartments parking lot. Another seven incidents were reported of garages and houses across the city being gone through between Friday and Monday, with small items being stolen and damage done to doorways that were forced open.

“In response to these incidents officers increased their patrols, paying close attention to any suspicious activity in and around homes after dark,” an RCMP release explains.

A 14-year-old male suspect was arrested Monday morning for break and enter, after police received a call at 2 a.m. from the victim saying the suspect was still in the home.

Mounties say the suspect fled on foot, but was quickly located with the help of Portage RCMP’s Police Dog Service. The accused was charged with two counts of break and enter, three counts of mischief, and one count of resisting arrest.

Investigators are still looking for connections to the accused in this matter and those that were reported over the weekend.

“We believe there were other people involved,” Const. O'Keefe says. “We hope someone out there in the community would be forthcoming with who that is and help us with our investigation.”

“Be aware of any suspicious activity. If you spot suspicious people, or if you hear a bang or noise at night, don't just write it off as nothing,” continues O'Keefe. “If you can, take a look and give us a call. We want to err on the side of caution and rule out any possible crime has taken place.”
