Building permits issued by the Portage Planning District this year are worth over 191 million dollars, so far, with a large number being industrial or commercial.

Development Officer Kinelm Brookes tells us more.

"Those permits are generally from Roquette," he says. "They've got a lot of work on the go out there. If you drive out there, you can see they have a lot of construction on the go. It's rising up out of the ground, so it's good for us, good for the community, good for Portage and area."

Brookes says it's lifted them above average, numbers-wise.

"We're way over our normal averages," he points out. "In the past, a year end total would be about 50 million. Last year, we just over doubled that, at just over 100 million for the year end. And this year, we're almost double that again."

Brookes acknowledges it would be nice to attain that 200 million level.

"But I won't hold my breath on that," he says. "Because I don't know if we have that much outstanding permits yet to come in. But we're phenomenal for what we're at, and I'm more than pleased with where we're at."
