The student council at Portage Collegiate Institute has been busy this year putting on activities for the school.

Grade 12 student Deidre Miller, the council's social convener, explains some of the activities organized by council so far this year.

"So the activities that we have done are the haunted house, I was the chair person of that, and we had a theme for it, it was like a little maze. We had dress-up points and if you dressed up in costume you got a point for your grade. We also did nab a niner which is kind of a tradition at PCI, it was really fun. I got to do it when I was a freshman and it was kind of embarrassing but it's part of being a freshman. We had cupcake decorating, karaoke, which was super fun, and a fashion show. We also planned a bake sale and 75% of the proceeds we made went to Recreational Opportunity for Kids."

Council president and grade 12 student Shaelyn Verhoeven adds upcoming student council activities are set to include a gym blast as well as a movie on the football field.

The girls note despite having a little more work on top of their normal work load, being on council doesn't cause any excess stress. Verhoeven explains;

"It takes up a lunch hour a week but it's a good lunch hour a week. You get to be with some of your friends at school and you get to talk about what you can do for the school and plan all that stuff together. It's fun, I like being a part of it."

She adds she joined student council because she loves being involved in all the different programs at the school.

Miller says she joined council because it seemed like a fun way to be in touch with her school and community, adding she recommends students join the council next year.
