The Municipality of North Norfolk council has asked the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Indigenous and Municipal Relations to consider making some changes to the Police Services Act. Mayor Neil Christoffersen says under the Act, all urban municipalities with a population of 750 or more are required to provide and pay for their own policing, noting before amalgamation MacGregor did indeed fit that bill. Christoffersen says after they amalgamated and became Ward 5 of the new Municipality of North Norfolk, however, they were still required to continue paying for policing. He notes that's why council sent a letter to the Justice Department and Municipal Relations Department to point out that there are approximately eight municipalities or former municipalities in Manitoba which are in the same situation.

Christoffersen adds they received a response from both departments saying that the province recognizes there have been significant changes in municipalities since policing responsibility was first established in the legislation and therefore the two government entities are currently undertaking a joint review. He says the North Norfolk council is hoping that once the review is conducted, paying for policing won't be part of what they're going to have to do. Christoffersen notes their letter also reminded the ministers that there are other municipalities bigger than MacGregor---larger than a thousand people---which have never incorporated into urban municipalities but are staying as local urban districts and don't have to pay for policing. He adds they hope council's request will help bring about a change in the province under the Police Services Act.
