The Portage la Prairie School Division is getting ready to unveil a new building within the city.

The new daycare at North Memorial School is nearing completion.

Superintendent Todd Cuddington gives us a progress update.

"We worked with the contractor and they are now in the final stages of just tidying up the building and going through a commissioning process. So, right next to the North Memorial School will be a child care center."

Many local contractors were involved in the project. The daycare will help ease high wait times at other facilities.

Cuddington says there's more than just a daycare in the building.

"There's a shared component that the school division will be using and we're calling it a community outreach room. So, it's multipurpose, somewhat similar to a classroom with an office and we will be doing all sorts of community outreach based out of that space."

20 spots will be designated for infants while the other 54 spots are for pre-schoolers. Cuddington explains more.

"It's a 74 seat childcare center infant and up. It's a beautiful, bright, airy facility - and we're looking forward to having a formal handover in October."
