Hey, nobody's perfect! And nobody knows that better than parents trying their best to raise children. That makes it a great name for a parenting program currently underway in Portage la Prairie. Allison Ritchie, program coordinator at the Tupper Street Family Resource Centre, explains what the Nobody's Perfect program is all about.

"It is a group for parents with children from the ages of 0 to 5 years. It's available all across Canada. It's an exciting way that the federal, provincial and territorial governments recognize young parents. The program itself focuses on the parents' own experiences and knowledge about what they already have about parenting."

She says the centre doesn't actually teach the program but walks parents through it, providing them with tools to learn about their own strengths. Ritchie says the participant-based program includes things like problem-solving. Parents are taught to recognize a problem and apply what they see as a solution. It's a five-week course, and is open for the first two weeks, then closed for only parents who attended the first two sessions or only one of those sessions."

Parents look at their experiences and get the opportunity to feel comfortable talking about that. It facilitates a chance for parents to focus on the weaker areas to make parenting easier.

The current sessions underway are now closed, but you can get involved in other courses throughout the year by contacting them at 239-3986. They're always happy to have you stop by the centre for a quick tour and introduction to the staff.
