We've heard about some hail in southern Manitoba over the last few weeks, and seen pictures of some of the damage.

It's something insurance companies monitor closely, because claims are likely to follow.

Portage Mutual President John Mitchell says this is normal for summer in the prairies, adding it's still early in the season.

"And generally what happens, we'll have one or two storms through course of the summer, and that is somewhat expected. We've one or two already, and hopefully, things dry up, not only for us, but for a lot of people. The constant rain just isn't very good for the farming community."

Mitchell says they're also monitor other issues.

"We haven't had a lot of sewer back-up issues yet, but as you see on the news, Estevan (SK) is just devastated, and that's weather related. When the ground gets saturated, the insured losses are more susceptible because it doesn't take a lot of rain after that to cause problems."

Mitchell says because Portage Mutual's a national insurer, they can spread the risk nation-wide, meaning people impacted in one area get security from other places unaffected.
