Manitoba Public Insurance has a couple of tips to keep drivers safe this winter.

Manager of External Communications Matt Schaubroeck says the best thing you can do to ensure safety on the roads this winter is reduce your speed.

"The slower you're going, the easier it's going to be to stop. If you're driving on a slippery roadway you're going to want to slow down, that's the safest step you can possible take. A 2 minute longer commute could save you a collision or injury, or even worse. It is important to keep that perspective during winter driving, we all want to be safe, keep our neighbours safe, and keep our friends safe."

Schaubroeck lists a couple more ways to make your winter drive a little easier.

"Winter tires are an important component of safe winter driving. Making sure your car is properly warmed up and ready to go on the road, making sure you're using sunglasses when driving on sunny days to make sure that glare doesn't get in the way, and really just maintaining your vehicle. Check fluid levels, make sure you have the right tires on, get regular tune-ups, just make sure you're staying safe preventatively as well as reactively."

He adds, once the snow comes drivers should be clearing all their windshields and their headlights to be seen on the road.
