With a sudden influx of refugees heading into Canada illegally, the Conservative Party has some concerns. Here's Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen.

"Our conservative caucus in Manitoba's concerned about this phenomenon for a couple of reasons. First of all, it's obviously not safe for people to be walking across fields in the middle of winter. It's not good for these people. It's not safe at all."

Bergen says Canada needs to ensure our border, immigration and refugees system's integrity remains intact. She explains people need to come through the proper channels if they wish to claim refugee status. With Emerson being so close to her riding, she adds the current idea that people can take a cab to Pembina, cross through a field and call 911 for refugee status is not good.

"We're calling on the Liberal government to enforce the laws of Canada, and utilize all legal means to strengthen the security of our border," Bergen says. "The government of Canada must respect the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement. That's an agreement that states the U.S. is a safe third country. So, we need to uphold that agreement. We also have at stake our relationship with out biggest trading partner the U.S.. There's a lot of activity that goes across our borders every single day in trade and commerce and people going back and forth. We need to ensure the U.S. knows that we respect and guard our borders and will uphold our laws and agreements that we have with the U.S.."
