The 2016 Moose Conference and Workshop will be held in Brandon next week to discuss current issues and research in moose conservation and management.

Rob Olson is Managing Director of the Manitoba Wildlife Federation.

He shares the grave concern of the declining moose population in Manitoba and says he hopes the province will recognize the seriousness of the situation. Olson adds that they are taking steps to have a formal survey done to get an accurate picture of the numbers of moose populating the area.

Olson says there is great concern when more landowners report that trespassing and poaching has increased. The severe decline in moose population is the stark proof that illegal harvesting of the animal is a sad reality.

The upcoming Moose Conference and Workshop will be a coming-together of moose managers and researchers from national and international agencies and institutions to present technical papers and discuss current issues and research in moose conservation and management.

Rob Olson says the Manitoba Wildlife Federation will be continuing their efforts to raise awareness of the dropping numbers of Moose in Manitoba, by strongly urging the province to get involved and take the situation more seriously.
