There will be no early end to winter. That's according to Manitoba Merv, the famous groundhog puppet at Oak Hammock Marsh. Merv made his annual appearance today and saw his shadow. According to folklore, if a groundhog sees his shadow on the morning of February 2nd, we will have another six weeks of winter. If he doesn't, spring is supposed to arrive early.

Nathalie Bays is a spokesperson for Oak Hammock Marsh and says Merv has a good track record.

"In 23 years, he's only been wrong once and that was three years ago. We got nasty phone calls following that saying, you know, you need to talk to your groundhog."

Bays says the rules of Groundhog Day are pretty simple; if the sun is out, the groundhog will see his shadow and we'll have six more weeks of winter.
