Tomorrow is Louis Riel Day and the Manitoba Agricultural Museum in Austin is putting on plenty of activities to celebrate the occasion.

Chief Museum Officer Georgette Hutlet says they're always excited for Louis Riel Day as it's the first event at the museum of the new year. She shares some of the activities going on at the museum tomorrow.

"Again, we'll be having our light show in the village. Hopefully the weather will hold out and we can bring in the horses for the horse-drawn sleigh rides. We have hot dogs and hot chocolate and for a cultural treat we'll be serving our special museum bannock with jams and jellies made from produce grown on the museum grounds. So visitors can take the bannock out and cook it on a stick over the open fire and bring it back in and have a really tasty treat."

Hutlet notes the Louis Riel Day activities are always popular with visitors, adding they often hear stories about people who've been coming to the museum for decades for diverse events.

"The stories come out about "I've been coming here since I was a little boy," and that could be a senior who's in his 70's. They talk about the history that's surrounding us here at the museum and what has changed over the years and what keeps bringing them back and it's always such an enjoyment that they receive when they're here."

She adds it's something they're glad to hear.

Hutlet explains the importance of celebrating Louis Riel Day at the museum.

"It's very much a part of Manitoba history and we are the Manitoba Agricultural Museum so it's very important to us as well. Some of our artifacts go back to that time in history and it's just a really great opportunity to be able to bring people to the museum and let them see what's here as well as enjoy the activities for that event. But it is important, I believe, to focus on our history and Manitoba history."

The museum will be open from 3:00 to 8:00 tomorrow of the activities.
