La Verendrye School's nutrition program has received a $10,000 grant from the Child Nutrition Council.

LVS principal Tracy Vanstone explains what this means for their program.

"It means that kids can be supplemented with snacks three times a week, as opposed to last year we were more close to two times a week. So it's just more opportunity to keep them fed, keep them alert, and learning."

Vanstone says the breakfast, lunch and snack programs at the school were created through a natural need. The programs started five years ago with simply having granola bars on hand for kids who were feeling hungry, but have since grown to encompass much more. Vanstone explains.

"Now were are supporting kids who are coming without lunch, we're supporting breakfast every single day at this school and I would say on average we're feeding 60 kids in the morning."

Vanstone notes the school makes a point of including food items which the kids may have never seen before in the snacks as it makes a more exciting experience for them. She adds a phenomenal commitment is made to the nutrition program by parent volunteers and school staff members.
