Yesterday was Louis Riel day and communities across the province put on activities in celebration of the occasion.

In MacGregor the day was jam-packed with activities including hockey games, skating, a kids' story corner, and it all kicked off with a pancake breakfast in the morning.

Coordinator Karla Gurke comments on how the day went.

"Absolutely perfect today. We've had the pancake breakfast, there was a line-up of people right out the front door. Public skating; same thing, people [are] having a hard time trying to find places so skate. So, it's been a great day."

She notes the warm weather affected the amount of people that came out for their outdoor activities but says the turnout was nonetheless similar to the previous year.

"With the weather being so mild today we haven't had a lot of people go snowshoeing and cross-county skiing and we were supposed to have a fire out back and doing bannock. So we've kind of lost a few people there today but I think, in that, we made up because we had soccer registration today so I think we got some extra people that way."

There were also special Louis Riel Day activities going on at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum in Austin.

Visitors to the museum could take a horse-drawn sleigh ride around the museum and enjoy some bannock, cooked over a fire, with homemade jams and jellies. Museum grounds resident Diana Pohl notes they had to modify some of their activities to adapt to the mild weather, such as substituting the sleigh for a wagon because of all the slush.

She says today was a good day to slow down and enjoy the outdoors as a family, adding the museum is always open to come and enjoy, and people don't have wait for special events to do so.
