The First Nations Tax Commission has asked the government to give taxing authority on cannabis to first nations, once we see legalization.

Long Plain First Nation Chief Dennis Meeches says the medicinal drug might be tax-free.

"Because the retail shops would be on a first nation, they'd probably be exempt from taxation. I'm not sure of the province's position," says Meeches.

Meeches notes taxation has been an ongoing issue for years.

"We could use tobacco as an example of that," says Meeches. "Taxation is exempt on first nations, that's the current legislation."
