Stonewall's Council is hoping to make better use of their recreation facilities. Mayor Lockie McLean says they have a number of amenities in town, ranging from school facilities to arenas, soccer pitches, and the curling club, but they've never had someone in charge of scheduling and addressing the needs of the groups that use the facilities. They're discussing the possibility of hiring a recreation coordinator, but doing so in partnership with the surrounding RM of Rockwood. McLean says there's a similar partnership in place for the northern portion of Rockwood with Tuelon, and it's something they want to mirror.

Mayor Lockie Mclean

"We're going to be talking to the RM of Rockwood. We heard a pitch of having a rec coordinator for the southern half of the RM of Rockwood. Perhaps we could work in liaison with them as the town of Stonewall. It's something the entire Council has agreed to actively explore."

McLean says if they decide to move forward, they'd include the hire in their 2017 budget and have someone in the role next year. He says they're still very early in the process and have yet to create a job description or gauge just what the value would be. However, he feels filling that position would greatly improve the effectiveness of scheduling for the town's athletic clubs and other organizations.

"We have all these amenities of recreational facilities, but we don't have anyone that can tie in the wants and needs of the user groups to make sure we're taking advantage of the facilities we have. Also, to give the opportunity for people to know what's available and when, and to just get better use and make Stonewall a healthier community by getting people active."

McLean says they've yet to reach out the Rockwood's Council but anticipates that meeting will take place before the end of the month.
