A program for kids dealing with a family member's issues with cancer is coming back to Portage la Prairie, through Central Plains Cancer Services.

Executive Director Sharilyn Knox outlines why Kids Can Cope has been brought back.

"We decided to this because there is a need. Right from the day I started as executive director, I was in communication with people in our region that are looking for this service, so we figured we needed to find a way to bring it back as quickly as we could, and offer the service to individuals around the region."

Knox believes it'll mitigate the fear they feel about cancer.

"Being able to understand that what you're feeling, and what you're going through is normal, and other people feel that way, too, helps. And what we want to do is give them some coping skills so that they can deal with those feelings and that they can carry on, and be individuals who prosper."

She adds their first Kids Can Cope event's coming up toward the end of the month.

"It's November 26 and 27. We're holding it out at Valley View Bible Camp, near MacGregor. It's an overnight camp for children ages 7 to 12. What they're going to be doing is learning resiliency, coping skills, understanding their feelings, at the same time having some fun."
