The MP for Brandon-Souris does not feel the federal government is doing enough to deal with, and support communities handling the influx of migrants crossing into Canada illegally.

Larry Maguire noted $30,000 has been supplied to the Emerson Fire Department and the community for the work they've done. He added that's a drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, that is going to be required to maintain these extra people.

Twenty-nine more migrants came across the border this past weekend at the Emerson area, and Maguire says with summer coming there could be hundreds more entering into Canada this way. "And now we have the prime minister saying we'll take all the refugees that want to come to Canada, including the illegal ones that are coming into Manitoba. I think that's a big concern for us right now in this region."

Maguire says safety is definitely one of the concerns. He said most of the people crossing into Canada fall under the Safe Third Country Agreement between Canada and the U.S., which means they are required to seek refugee status in the country they first landed in. And in the majority of these cases, that is the United States.

"If they've been refused there, then we need to be very careful about knowing who we are letting into our country," he adds. "When I speak to people in our communities (Westman region), and people across Manitoba, that's a big concern that I'm hearing."
