Tomorrow is special at SouthWinds Horse Rescue, east of Oakville.

They're holding their first family fun day for kids dealing with cancer.

SouthWinds' Irene Patterson explains the idea for the event came while she was at work in Elie, and overheard the mother of a child with cancer.

"Just sad. The mum said that she wished that there was somebody around with horses that her daughter could even touch or go for a pony ride -- she just turned 5. And I thought, 'I can do that, so let's do it.' So we're doing it."

Patterson says the family fun day will include pony rides, on a number of breeds

"We have a mini, a Welsh, a small Morgan, and a thoroughbred/quarter horse cross, and dressing them all up. We're going to have unicorns and butterflies. We're going to have hot dogs, a bonfire. There's a gentleman from Elie going to come out and sit around the fire and pick his guitar. I just want them to forget, and when they're going through treatments, they can think back, maybe, and have a good memory."

Businesses contributing include the Oakville Lions Club, Winnipeg Master Feeds, Luke's Town Service for the side-by-side, and the Elie Grocery Store donated all the food and the condiments.

Patterson calls them all fantastic people. She adds the event's open to all families in the province with kids dealing with cancer. It'll be from noon until 8 p.m.
