Ralph Shewfelt has been building duck houses for the local waterfowl.

He explains he put one up a decade ago and it has been on his bucket list to make more ever since. He has recently put up several more and shares why.

"Last Spring there were gold eyed ducks in the box in front of our house. They'd come flying up to the hole and there'd already be a duck in there so the duck would poke at them and they'd fly away and then they'd come back. So we actually had one duck in the house and two sitting on the roof so we said we'd better make some more houses."

Shewfelt notes the ducks seem to prefer the older houses to the new ones. He shares an observation of the ducks.

"It's just nice to see the ducks and if you ever get the chance it only takes about two minutes and the small ducks are coming out and then they're into the water. So if you happen to be looking it's something to see. It looked like they come out off a trampoline for something, they just come flying out [of the house] and land on the ground and then they're off to the water."

He says it's interesting to see the ducks, adding Portage has a good lake for it.
