Today is Louis Riel Day, and across Manitoba, events to mark occasion are happening.

That includes the town of MacGregor, where the Nor-Mac Centre's the hub of day-long activity.

It'll be capped off by an exhibition hockey game between the MacGregor Iron Maidens and the Ladies of Baker Colony.

This game's a five-year tradition that supports local causes, and the Iron Maidens' Dayna Yurkiw calls it a worthwhile event.

"It brings the community together, it promotes physical activity, it showcases talent, certainly breaks down some stereotypes. The game's kind of a reminder that sport is for everyone, and with funds going to worthwhile charities and organizations locally, it's really a win-win for everyone."

Yurkiw says this may be the best attended exhibition female senior hockey game in the province.

"Last year, we were close to a full house, other years we haven't been far behind that. I think my favourite part about the crowd itself is seeing peoples' perspective change. They're initially drawn in by the novelty -- the unconventional uniform, the skirts, and then after a while they start to enjoy the actual game. And to see them coming back year after year, and commenting on the quality of play, it really means a lot."

The game starts at 7:30, and features a food drive for the Community Resource Centre, plus a 50-50 and silver collection for the Portage Family Abuse Prevention Centre.
