While attending Association of Manitoba Muncipalities (AMM) meetings in Winnipeg earlier this week, Portage la Prairie Mayor Irvine Ferris had the chance to cash in on a political wager.

Portage's Mayor and Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson made a jersey bet on the Manitoba Junior Hockey League quarter-final series between the Selkirk Steelers and Portage Terriers, obliging the loser to publicly wear the opposing team's jersey for one day.

The Terriers beat Selkirk in six games -- a crushing defeat for not just the team, but its city's mayor.

"He was shocked and surprised, to say the least," Ferris says of Johannson's reaction to the series' outcome.

Johannson made good on the bet during the AMM meetings, proudly sporting a white and green Terriers jersey. Ferris was relieved of the outcome, having lost a jersey bet on the Terriers in 2015 with Steinbach mayor Chris Goertzen. The Portage mayor memorably walked around in Pistons blue for a day.

"It's very vindicating," Ferris chuckles. "It feels a lot better having another mayor wear your jersey than the other way around."
