The RM of Portage la Prairie gave the thumbs-up to work requested on Road 45 West at the Trans-Canada Highway just west Highway 16 near Portage la Prairie. Deputy Reeve Roy Tufford outlines the issue.

"We've had requests now for a couple of years to redo this. That asphalt is under a half a mile, but it's the Number 1 Highway to the railroad tracks. It services the big Agrium Fertilizer plant, and now also services Ilta Grain -- that's a growing company and is expanding there. It's full of potholes. It's in terrible shape."

Tufford says the RM received word to move forward.

"We identified it as part of our infrastructure that we need to fix. We applied for a grant to get it from the province and we were successful. That will go ahead probably in the coming year. If not, then in the following year. There are a lot of heavy trucks on it. So, it's understandable that it wouldn't last and wouldn't have a very long life-span. But it's done really quite well. And now if we can get another layer laid on top of it, it would be good going forward."
