It's All Hallows' Eve, and the Portage la Prairie RCMP have some tips to have a fun and safe evening trick-or-treating.

Community Liaison Officer Constable Sean O'Keefe lists a few tips to help parents keep their kids safe this evening.

"The primary thing we want for parents is to be with their kids. If they're young in age you want to make sure they're accompanied by an adult or an adult relative, or at least an older brother or sister who's able to look after them. Go to home that you know, well lit homes and people that you know as well. Wearing an easily visible costume as well, so not dressing all in black but having a maybe bright coloured costume, or reflective elements to your costume can keep you safe."

He says it's important to go through your child's haul at the end of the night.

"We always want to be sure that whatever we're having as a treat is safe to eat. So parents, inspect the bag of candy and watch for anything that may have been tampered with. Obviously, if a chocolate bar has been opened, or if a lollypop or sucker looks like it's been repackaged, toss it away. Any home made treats, use your own discretion, but you can't speak to who's made those treats."

Children will be darting across roads throughout the evening, and O'Keefe wants everyone to be alert.

"Motorists, if you're out and about this Halloween night, keep an eye out for kids darting out from behind vehicles. Reduce your speed, that's the safest bet tonight, and if you can just keep another watchful eye."

The RCMP are also concerned about mischief to property on Halloween. "Don't hesitate to call in that kind of activity," says O'Keefe. "We want to make sure everyone is having a safe and fun night."
