Habitat for Humanity recently received a $5,000 cheque from Portage Mutual Insurance.

Portage Chapter Fundraising Chair Betty-Jean Checkley says Portage Mutual is a wonderful supporter of Habitat for Humanity and they really appreciate it. She explains the cost of the builds increase every year.

"The property lots are more expensive and the requirements are more rigorous. We have to put in air-conditioning and things like this which we didn't have to do before. And of course the actually supplies, they go up as well. So it's a constant thing having to raise funds and that's why we appreciate all of our local support, like Portage Mutual."

Checkley says the money will go toward their ninth and tenth builds.

"We are digging the basement in August and carrying on from there; a double build on that lot. So, there will be two families, which have been pre-selected."

She adds the target date for the families to move in is March 2018.

Checkley notes community members who would like to get involved can come out to their blitz days in the fall.

"That's when we open it up to community members, people that maybe don't have time to be part of it all year long but can go out for a day and pound some nails or help put up some gyprock or insulation or whatever needs to be done that day."

The blitz days take place in September and October.
