The President of Association of Manitoba Municipalities says Budget 2016 doesn't suggest a lot of major policy shifts. But Chris Goertzen, Mayor of Steinbach says it comes from a party that only a few weeks ago took over as government.

That government Tuesday announced $1.8 billion in strategic infrastructure funding for roads and bridges, flood protection, hospitals, schools, universities and colleges and municipal infrastructure.

"It's good to see clearly that they want to see municipalities have a fair say in how infrastructure dollars get spent across Manitoba," says Goertzen. "That's something we've been asking for, for quite some time and we see that spattered throughout the budget."

Goertzen says he will be watching closely how this billion dollars will be spent on infrastructure, noting municipalities have 60% of public infrastructure, yet only receive eight cents on every tax dollar.

"Until we see concrete action, we will be cautious," admits Goertzen. "But at the same time we are optimistic because we see the right words and we expect that we will see the right actions from this government in the coming weeks."
