Wednesday is Free Youth Swim night at Splash Island in Portage la Prairie.

The City of Portage and the Portage Regional Recreation Authority have partnered to keep the event free, and Youth City Councillor Donnovan Hillman's confident it will be a hit.

"We tried it last year in July and we had to charge admission, there's some certain costs that come along with it. This year, looking at how great the PRRA free public swims go, they always seem to hit around that capacity mark. So we want the youth to be able to enjoy that and get in, and not pay anything. So it was kind of a perfect fir for one of my last events."

Hillman explains some of the details.

"Times are 6-8 p.m. We're going to have some music going -- kind of like a small pool party -- but the capacity will of course be enforced, it has to be. The night looks great for weather, we're hoping that it stays that way, the rest of the week doesn't look so good, but Wednesday night we're hoping for great weather and want to invite any youth that would like to come out 12 to 18, free of charge at Splash Island."

He adds there's been a lot of good feedback so far, and capacity will be enforced.
