The deputy reeve in the RM of Woodlands is looking forward to an opportunity to meet with municipal leaders from across Canada. Today marks the first day of the four-day Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Winnipeg, and Ila Buchanan's attending. She feels these conferences are vital for all of Canada's municipal leaders, especially when it comes to networking opportunities.

"It just amazes me what people are thinking out there, and their initiatives. You sit back and think 'Wow! Why didn't we think of that?' well, you don't have to, somebody else is. You just have to take the idea, make it work for you, and customize for your RM or your region."

She feels some municipalities don't realize the importance of these types of events, but believes it's a great opportunity to learn ways to move any municipality forward.

"We don't live in our own little world, this is globally. We have to think outside the box if we expect succession and progress in these regions. If we don't grown, and keep up with the rest of society, why would we expect anyone to want to live here?"

Buchanan also notes the FCM conference provides an opportunity to meet with federal party leaders, an opportunity not common for those in the rural areas.

"It's not too often you get to meet the leaders of the other federal political parties. I believe they'll all be there speaking and bringing their greetings. We're lucky enough to have Prime Minister Trudeau making an appearance. I think it's fabulous."

Overall she says the FCM is a great organization, noting without their work municipalities wouldn't receive the Gas Tax Rebate.
