The Portage Family Resource Centre held its first pop-up in the park event at Mckay Avenue park this past Wednesday, and they're proud of how well it went.

The two summer students behind the plan were Sheridan Oswald and Gracie Rose, who both put together the ideas, set up the activities, and ran the event on the day as well. The pop-up was from 10 a.m. to noon, but you didn't have to go there for the whole event. Oswald goes into detail on how this event came together.

"With the pandemic we wanted to get the kids out and about doing fun activities," explains Oswald. "We came up with the idea of 'pop-up at the park' so it encourages families to come and go as they please, and we have a lot of fun stations they can play with."

The stations include multiple games, utilizing the structure at the park, and dancing to music. Rose explains some of the challenges that making an event like this would come with, especially during COVID-19.

"A big thing was making sure that the toys and activities that we have are things that are easy to clean just due to COVID and try and keep things as safe as possible," says Rose. "We also have things spread out. We have our stations all fairly spread apart so that everyone is keeping their distance."

They both add they're excited to keep the pop-up in the park event going, as they have a second one planned at the Red River Campus Playground on August 11.
