This Saturday, if you see someone running through Portage la Prairie, give them a wave because you may run into Rick Fall, who's jogging to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., for charity.

Fall began his trek from Victoria B.C. on April 7 and has been winding his way across the Prairies. Each day, he averages 30-40 kilometres and reached the Manitoba border on June 12. Fall explains what inspired him to run.

"Sometime around probably 2015 or 16, I decided I'm going to do something like Terry (Fox) did to give back to society. I never had a name for it or anything. I said I could do it, and once I said I'm going to do this run, I committed myself to it," says Fall. "I changed things up a little bit and decided to go from my hometown (in B.C) to my existing home (in Ontario)."

The run is cleverly titled Fall-o-Rick Home to Home. There is also a website where you can track Rick's journey, see a live GPS of where he is running, and donate to the two charities he's running for. Fall says it's been a tiring yet rewarding journey.

"A lot of it is mind over matter, and it's a mental game that I'm playing. Some days I get up in the morning, and the first few kilometres are tough, but I think about what I'm doing this for," says Fall. "It's for children in need, Make a Wish Canada, and Childhood Cancer Canada, who they don't have a choice of their destiny. So, we're trying to help as much as we can."

Fall is no stranger to running and has participated in marathons in Vancouver, Toronto, Chicago, Boston, the Berlin Marathons and the New York City Marathon.

During the journey, Fall says he's had a few encounters with bears, but it's been great to get out and see the country.

"(Going) through the mountains was scenic, and things levelled off getting down through into Calgary, which made running a little bit easier," says Fall. "I thought westerly winds would be in my favour most of the time, but quite often. I had a headwind, which was tough. I ran into a few days with wet snow but never got into anything too bad."
