The Immigration Partnership Winnipeg (IPW) is working together with Portage's Local Immigration Partnership along with other such organizations across the province to inform everyone that COVID-19 does not discriminate, and neither should we.

"The objective of the campaign is to try and condemn the association of COVID-19 with any ethnic or racial group, to bring awareness that this is going on, and to provide information and tools for victims and witnesses of discrimination or discriminatory practices due to COVID-19 or in general," says Local Immigration Partnership Coordinator Mitch Tilk.

He notes the campaign will run for about the next few months in hopes of doing some social media material on #EssentialinMB. Tilk says they want to get as many people as they can in the next few months to highlight how newcomers' work has been essential to our economy.

"We have heard about some racist incidents in Manitoba -- some verbal harassment, spitting, malicious jokes," adds Tilk. "There's one case where it even escalated to violence. So, we're trying to curb some of the anti- (particularly) Asian sentiment because of COVID."
