The RM of Cartier is getting federal and provincial funding to repair the Elie Wastewater lagoon.

Reeve Dale Fossay says the municipality received written word earlier this week the project was approved by both levels of government. An infrastructure study conducted by the RM of Cartier years ago identified the Elie lagoon as needing repair. It's over 40 years old and Fossay says it has suffered significant erosion along one of its banks due to wind.

"We've been been applying to the federal government and province for funding for years," Fossay says. "This is good news for us. The level of funding we've received will be 50 per cent from the federal government and 25 per cent from the province."

The RM of Cartier will be responsible for covering the remaining 25 per cent of an estimated $1.5-million job.

“A $1.5-million repair is very costly and certainly only affordable with help from both levels of government,” Fossay notes. “We feel very fortunate to be getting that level of support.”

Fossay adds, the municipality is still awaiting word from the feds on timelines for funding and deadlines for project completion.
