Dry conditions are hindering gardeners early start to the season.

Our Farm Greenhouses Manager Shea Doherty gives a few tips on trimming, and watering.

"Those leaves are holding the moisture back right now, leave some of them there just to keep the moisture in the ground. The wind is going to be what's going to dry the ground out -- so if you want -- leave some of the leafs there just to keep it good for now, especially if you don't have water to apply. they're starting to come up as well, and keep some of the old stock there, and use water sparingly. Make sure you're putting it around the plan, rather than watering the whole garden because the plant will only retain a certain amount."

Doherty has a couple of tips on trimming.

"Trimming for early spring, watch that. When you do your trimming on your perennials, if you're going to cut the new stem it's going to leak out. So that's going to cause it to need more water if you do that, so keep it on the old stock that you're trimming rather than a new plant."
