Several dog lovers were out today in Portage la Prairie walking about Crescent Lake. Dog owners are walking their dogs to raise funds for the various guide dogs that assist people in their everyday lives.

Lion member and chairman of the 2016 Purina Dog Walk Wilfred Schellenberg tells us about the turnout.

"So, people have trickled in and gone on their walks. People have donated. Pet Valu has donated some freebies there. And Mac Kennels has donated some dog food. So, just little rewards for people to take home."

Wilfred SchellenbergSchellenberg adds, "Some people have donated online, and I checked last night around midnight and there was $500 had come in. Last year in pledges and donations we had $5,300. And then the Lion's Club Oakville, MacGregor, Portage and the la Prairie Lioness club all made donations. Then we also set up a table at Portage Supermarket one day and Portage Co-op another day, and took in another $170+ this year."

The Portage Kennel Club and the Prairieburn K-9 Academy took part, along with a few others.

Draws are being made after the walk for prizes. The first prize for largest amount of pledges is a dog food dispenser, second is a soft carrier, and the third prize is a dog toy.

Donors include: Mac Kennels, Pet Valu, Portage Co-op and Portage Supermarket.

About 25 people showed up, including Jennifer McDougall with her registered guide dog, Kesha.

"We're doing the annual Purina Dog Walk to raise funds for all the different varieties of guide dogs. Everybody here is participating and fund-raising for the event. The money goes to the Lions foundation of Canada for their guide dogs."

Team Prairieburn K-9 Academy member Pat Calder shares what it's like to help raise funds for the cause.

"It's awesome. It's an excellent cause, and we're all involved with the world of dogs. So, it is our honour to assist in raising funds. We're walking from the Lions' Den to Yellowquill school and back. And we're just having a good time. So, we have no idea how long it's going to take us. We stop and visit and chat without people. So, it's a beautiful day, really. No rain yet. And no hot sun. That's kinda nice."
