The waiting game continues for the Municipality of West-Interlake, as they continue to work to recover Disaster Financial Assistance funding related to the floods of 2011 and 2014. Reeve Randy Helgason says it's been an incredibly long process, yet they're still owed about $3 million in unpaid claims. He says they've only recovered about a third of what was spent in the flood of 2014, resulting from what Helgason describes as a flawed process.

"I recognize that everybody has a job to do, but an RM of our size with a budget of our size, when you put out about $10 million in 2014, it's not feasible for a municipality to not be able to recover that funding in a suitable timeframe."

However, Helgason's remaining optimistic. He's hoping the new provincial government can help expedite the process, so they can recover what's been owed for two years. He also credits Interlake MLA Derek Johnson, noting he's been assisting the municipality throughout the process.

While there could be hope on the horizon, there's still uncertainty. Helgason says they're not sure if they'll ever recover the full amount owed under DFA, but remains positive in saying they should at least see the situation improve.

"I don't know if it will be totally resolved, but I think it will be improved. We're hopeful that we'll recover the bulk of the outstanding funding that's owed to us. If we can do that I think we'll be in pretty good shape."

The unpaid DFA claims have been an ongoing issue for the municipality, as some residents express concerns over debt due to the unpaid funding.
