Thursday's election day in Dakota Tipi First Nation for its next chief and council. Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada appointed electoral officer Bob Norton to oversee the election who says nominations were made a month and a half ago.

Electoral Officer Bob Norton"And the campaigning has taken place since then. The poll opened this morning at 9:00 and we'll be opened until 8:00 tonight. People can vote in person as they come into the hall, or if they can't make it to the polling station today they were able to phone and asked for a mail-in ballot."

Mail-in ballots were collected today.

Norton says 30 voters came in by noon, and it's usually late afternoon when most come to make their choice. He adds Dakota Tipi's a small band with only 284 adult voters compared to some bands comprised of over 2,000 and up to 6,000 voters. Norton notes the count should be made rather quickly tonight.

Stay posted for results tomorrow.
