Ever since he was 8 years old Cole Johnston has wanted to work on the railroad, now he's going to Red River College to follow his dream.

Johnston explains the content of course he'll be taking.

"This course is 15 weeks, it starts September 12th all the way to the 23rd, so right before Christmas. It includes everything on being a conductor, whether that be rules and regulations, how to climb cars, everything in general basically. They pack it all in."

Johnston is a part of the Portage Model Railroad Club and says he's always liked trains, planes, and automobiles. He admits he doesn't know anyone else his age who has the same passion for working on the railroad.

"Not many people want to do it, it's the outdoors and hard work, on call 24/7. Your first year you get a max of two weeks holidays and other than that you're working, you're on call. I think that's the hardest part of the job. And you've got to be precise with it, you've got to be on top of things, you're the manager of the train basically."

Johnston notes despite all the hard work a career as a train conductor does pay well. He adds this career is something he's looking forward to.
