The growing popularity of online shopping is going to mean some changes for the Municipality of Glenella Lansdowne. The municipality's Council is looking at civic addressing for the municipality, something that's currently not in place in the rural area. There was a big push for civic addressing several years ago, but at that time Reeve Richard Funk says having an address connected to each home wasn't deemed necessary by those they spoke with.

"We talked to people that were in the know, and they said the fire department and the police didn't use those numbers. They didn't at that time, but now there are all the different couriers we have delivering parcels and goods due to all the people ordering off the internet, who are having them delivered by private courier, and they won't deliver unless you have one of those signs."

He says the Council now feels it's necessary to move forward with civic addressing, as those in the rural areas ordering through private couriers are forced to have their parcels delivered to family members or friends in the nearest communities, such as Arden or Glenella.

Although Funk says it's something the municipality needs, it's not going to be rolled out all at once. Funk says to have the civic addressing completed all at once it would cost the municipality about $40,000, leading to their decision to tackle the work over the next three years.

"Any community in our situation to take $40,000 out of their budget unexpectedly, the money just wouldn't be there to do that. It would have to come out of reserves. We felt that because we haven't had these numbers all these years that we could start it and do a third at a time, that we could afford to do that."

They're hoping that by dividing the work over the next three years, they can avoid increasing taxes to cover the cost of the civic addressing.
