The Portage la Prairie Public Works Department has been dealing with weeds by the causeway on Crescent Lake this week. Superintendent Brian Taylor says they dispatched a long-stick hoe to the causeway where weeds were removed.

"We did our annual weed spray, and got a pretty good kill on the weeds," says Taylor. "Then after that was done, the weeds floated to top and remained until they dissolved and dropped again. Portage had some big winds that blew all the weeds toward the causeway where they sat."

Once the weeds gathered and rotted, they caused a stench in the surrounding area which isn't too common. He says the hoe endeavoured to remove as many weeds as possible to curb the smell. Taylor adds the chemical used on the weeds is called Reward, and is designed for aquatic life and authorized by the Province of Manitoba.
