They came from north, south, east, and west -- literally -- as CFRY celebrated its 60th anniversary last night at the Glesby Centre in Portage la Prairie.

A near capacity crowd, which included some former employees, took in the event, which featured four Manitoba bands in concert.

CFRY Program Director Ryan Simpson says the response brings home how significant the radio station is in the region.

Ryan Simpson after the celebration ended"A lot of people grew up with CFRY. They have such passionate memories from the '50s, '60s, and 70s. For a lot of people, that was their television. They listened to the talents shows, the Polka Party, and the Sunday Request Show faithfully, and it means a lot to them."

Station Manager Paul Harland says the event was a great success.

"We had a full house, and all the entertainment was top notch, and everyone was appreciative. I thought it was a tremendous way to celebrate 60 years from CFRY."

Harland feels the turnout shows how important radio is in the community.

"Our audience came out tonight, in full support, and I think it just goes to show how many people listen to radio, and CFRY, and its longevity. We had people from all over the province here tonight, so it was a great event. Those people listen to us every day, so it was exciting they could be here tonight."

The Murray McIntyre Band, Loose Unit, Brennan's Bounty, and The Kendra Kay Band provided almost non-stop entertainment.

Besides entertainment, the evening saw Angela Bouchard win a trip to Nashville.
